Description: Christie’s Paris is honoured to present the sale of the exceptional collection of Jacqueline Matisse Monnier, on 13 April 2022 in Paris. This selection includes 78 works by the most renowned artists of the 20th century. In addition to two Océanie, la mer et Oceanie, le ciel pieces by Henri Matisse, Jacqueline’s grandfather, works by Diego and Alberto Giacometti will be offered for auction, including a wonderful painted bronze Petit buste d’homme by Alberto and a patinated bronze Porte-manteau au hibou by Diego, as well as the iconic Hippopotame I bathtub by François-Xavier Lalanne, two 1935 gouaches by Joan Miró, Yves Klein’s magnificent IKB 183, Boites en valise by Marcel Duchamp, vibrant sculptures by Nikki de Saint-Phalle and an impressive composition by Simon Hantaï, a nod to Henri Matisse’s paper cut-outs. An historic collection attesting to the close ties of the Matisse and Matisse Monnier family with the French and international art scenes. Granddaughter of Henri Matisse and daughter-in-law of Marcel Duchamp, Jackie evolves in an abundant artistic environment. The greatest artists of the 20th century, such as Alberto and Diego Giacometti, François-Xavier Lalanne, Joan Miró (Jackie's godfather), Riopelle, Klein, Man Ray, Niki de Saint Phalle, or even Jean Dubuffet, gathered around of Jacqueline and her mother, Alexina Duchamp, in an atmosphere of sharing and conviviality. The influence of Pierre Matisse, father of Jackie and eminent gallery owner in New York, is also felt in the artworks of this collection. From these captivating destinies, we remember today the creative emulation and the ideal of freedom that Jackie is embodying. It remains an inspiration to perpetuate the Collection Jacqueline Matisse Monnier, by sharing and circulating it.
